Min Li is a small village situated near the foot of Central Mountain Range in Fu Li(富里) Township. It is the smallest among the villages in Fu Li, yet it had created a miracle in Taiwan's economy during the Japanese colonization and the post-war periods. After entering this area, it hard for most people to imagine, and afterwards be taken by surprise, that this village once had the highest tobacco workshop density across the island of Taiwan. Min Nan(閩南) is the minority while Haka(客家) and Pin Pu(平埔) share the rest of the population. Most of the locals from the Pin Pu group tend to worship spirits, and the Bu Norn(布農) people are the goers of Catholic Church. What was the tobacco industry like when this small village was enjoying the flourishing economy brought to them by tobacco making? Where did the immigrating tobacco farmers come from? These will serve as the main focus of this research.
