Hsieh Wei (William Hsieh, 1916-1970) studied theology in Taiwan and medicine in Japan during World War II. He returned to Nantou to work at his father''''s Ta Tong Clinic in 1946, and was ordained in 1949 into the Nantou Presbyterian Church. He volunteered to join the Mennonite Medical Mobile Clinic in 1950. In 1953, while an assistant resident at Buffalo General Hospital, United States, he decided to build a tuberculosis clinic for the mountain people. Hsieh''''s work to medical mission extended beyond Nantou County to the mountain and coastal areas in both Changhua and Tainan County. Besides running the Ta Tung Clinic and tuberculosis centers, he devoted one day a week to each of three other medical institutions: the Pu Li Christian Hospital for Mountain people, where he served as a surgeon and nursing-school instructor (1955-1970); the Bak- Mng Mercy’s Door Clinic at the Great Salt Coast of Tainan County, which was run by the Mustard Seed Mission (1960-1970) where he performed amputations for sufferers of blackfoot disease; and Er Lin Christian Hospital for children suffering from polio (1964-1970) which began as a coastal medical mobile clinic and later became a branch of the Changhua Christian Hospital, PCT, in Er Lin. In 1969, he was elected the moderator of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church in Taiwan. Hsieh was extremely occupied with public, medical, and ecclesiastical commitments. He died in a car crash in 1970 while driving to work for an emergency case at Er Lin Hospital. His last words to his wife before he left for Er Lin were, "Arriving a minute earlier at the hospital is a minute less pain suffered by the patients, and one more patient''''s life might even be saved." He was known as the Albert Schweitzer of Taiwan and was posthumously awarded a special honor in 1992, the second Taiwan Annual Medical Reward.

Hsieh was a pastor and a doctor who had the remarkable personality and capacity to make up his value orientation and he understood his own tendency and mission so that Hsieh would fight for the poor environment in his era with strong will and patience. All seemed to agree that Hsieh’s work was over loaded, but he never complained. Due to Hsieh’s Taiwan subjectivity connected with his value idea, his calling and dedication to Taiwan made his case more in deeds than in words. Hsieh Wei was a great example of medical mission in Taiwan.
