taromak is the only Rukai tribe in Taitung county. This research made investigation on vegetation ecology in their traditional territory along with the interview of elder members in the tribe. And the vegetation type in the traditional territoryand was established and evaluated based on community aboriginal mapping. This research recorded 4 environmental factors in 93 plots and the canonicial correspondence analysis (CCA) was used to analyze the relation between environmental factors and vegetation types. Both the altitude and the distance from water were the major factors affecting the distribution of vegetation. The classification of vegetation type according to two-way indicator species analysis (TWINSPAN) showed 4 vegetation types and 7 vegetation subtypes. These results were compared with the vegetation information from the interview of the elder members, and employed to assist the traditional ecology survey on forest vegetation.

In the aspect of plant utilization, the plant investigated and recorded in ethnobotany are divided into 6 categories of usage, i.e, edible, technological, industrial, medicinal, ceremonial and symbolic. The language in taromak and their practical usages of these plants were also recorded. The collecting conditions and market potentials were inspected and evaluated. This research also discussed many existing laws related to the land usage in aboriginal areas. The objective of this study is to conserve traditional plant culture in this tribe and promote sustainable development and green industry at the same time.
