Abstract

The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between the five major personality traits and the adaptability to life of the aboriginal students in the school where the researcher worked. To achieve the purpose, the researcher designed “Measurement on five major personality traits” and “Measurement on adaptability to life” as research tools, basing on the analysis of the previous literature. The research subjects were the aboriginal students in the school where the researcher worked. Two hundred and four aboriginal students along with 1117 non-aborigines were randomly selected and questionnaires were distributed among them. Means implemented to conduct the data analysis of the questionnaires were shown as follows: one-way analysis of variance, Pearson’s correlation coefficient, multiple stepwise regression, and t-test.

Major outcomes:

1.According to the data analysis, of all the five major personality traits regarding aboriginal students, “intimateness and friendliness” holds the highest measure. Of all the aspects in the adaptation to life regarding aboriginal students, “physical adaptation” holds the highest measure.

2. Owing to the differences in the background variants, noticeable variations in some aspects in the five major personality traits among aboriginal students were observed.

3. Owing to the differences in the background variants, noticeable variations in some aspects in the adaptation to life among aboriginal students were observed.

4. As far as aboriginal students are concerned, the higher measures in the five major personality traits are, the better the adaptation to life appears.

5. As far as aboriginal students are concerned, there is an apparent positive correlation between most of the aspects between the five major personality traits and the adaptation to life.

6. The“extrovertedness and assertiveness”of aboriginal students is seen as the most explanatory when it comes to how the five major personality traits affect adaptation to life.

7. Of the five major personality traits, The most prominent differences between aboriginal and non-aboriginal students are “intimateness and friendliness” and “diligence and integrity”.

8. When the variations in the adaptation to life between aborigine and non-aboriginal students are compared, the study shows that there is no apparent difference in the t-test value between them.
