Based on Van Dijk’s method for news discourse analysis, this study analyzes the text with the four biggest newspapers in Taiwan including the China Times, Liberty Times, United Daily News, and the Apple Daily. By means of an analysis of “Pig-killing bribery”, which is a controversial affair occurred in the Hualien Country magistrate by-lection in 2003, we propose the representation of the relevant news reports for the indigenous peoples.

This study aims at view for social reality construction and bases on Foucault’s notion of power to respond to the following questions: How did the local main media represent the controversial pig-killing affair? What was the situation in the media spokesmen’s discussions and contests against each other? What kind of ideologies did the four newspapers adopt? From the three aspects we discuss the main media’s representation for the indigenous peoples.

This study found that the representations of the main newspapers media for the pig-killing affair are: “the focusing on political purpose”, “the representation of Hans logic”, and “the exposure of disadvantaged indigenous peoples”. Other than the newspapers editors, there were spokesmen from the elites of politics, academics, police, indigenous peoples, or even religion. They rationalized their standpoints with their individual discursive formation and weakened the other’s standpoints. Though the four newspapers share some coherent thoughts for this controversial affair in regard to the indigenous peoples-caring, the proportion is rather small and those reports are involved with state of chauvinism and hegemony, which often lead the indigenous peoples to become the others .

The correlation between indigenous peoples-related news and Taiwan’s social culture value is closely bound up so that when the media write for news they rarely ground on objective facts but mingle with many subjective construction from the external factors, which is the typical ideology long existing in the society. The ways media handle the issues of indigenous people might be enhanced in the wake of indigenous peoples’ racial awareness. Yet, the mass media still act in a constrained social controlling manner; as some even treat the indigenous peoples as the others or push them to the limit; so the variety of newspapers reporting didn’t help the indigenous peoples in raising their social status than the Hans period. The newspapers construction itself is the existing values and norms of the society.
