This study explores the Truku’s cognition of traditional medicine and medical utilization with the methods of semi-structural interview and participant observation. The results illustrate that the educational level, age and traditionality of family life are among the most closely related factors to their traditional medical knowledge: the less the educational level, the older in age, and the more traditional in family life, the more traditional medical knowledge. In the meantime, the analyses of qualitative data also demonstrate that Truku’s traditional medicine is not solely concerned with physiological problems, but is interlocked with their traditional religious ideology and social norms. Some Trukus tend to seek the helps from traditional medicine while they experienced unexplainable serious accidents or physical problems that western medicine could not be effectively identified or cured. Given this scenario, the Truku’s traditional medicine is right in the stage of transformation as they can’t help but interact with the majority Chinese nearby. It is recommended to take into consideration the indigenous health belief in public health policy and apply their knowledge of traditional medicine and related sociocultural factors in the promotion of community health and prevention of fatal accidents.
