Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate the condition about physical fitness and physical self-concept for the 4th, 5th and 6th Taiwanese aboriginal elementary school students in Jian-shi township, Hsin-chu county. The research adopted Health Fitness Test and children physical self-concept questionnaire (Pon-Huei Chuang, Li-Kang Chi, 1997). Participants were 174 4th, 5th and 6th Taiwanese aboriginal graders from five elementary schools in Jian-shi township. Descriptive statistics, independent sample t-test, one-way ANOVA and Pearson correlation were computed for data analysis. The results of the study would be shown in the dimensions: the condition of health physical fitness, the role of different background in the performance on the health physical fitness and self-perception of bodies.

First of all, the results on the condition of health physical fitness showed the following facts. (1)Overall, the body mass index was great. (2)In details, the sit-and-reach test of males was better than that of females. (3)Males’ standing broad-jump was ordinary, but females’were good. (4)Moreover, the sit-up test was ordinary, (5)800m test was good.

Second, the influence of demographics on physical fitness and physical self-concept: (1)different grades in standing long jump had significant difference; (2)different genders had no significant difference on physical fitness and physical self-concept; (3)Whether subjects attended school teams or not significantly affected their performance on standing broad-jump; (4) The exercise frequency every week did not significantly affect the performance on the health physical fitness and self-perception of bodies; (5) Different exercise time caused significant different performance on standing broad-jump, the sit-and-up test, and the 800m test ; (6)Physical perception on exercise every time did not significantly affect the performance on the health physical fitness and self-perception of bodies.

Finally, the relation of physical fitness and physical self-concept of students: every physical fitness test was low to medium relationships, but we did not found every physical fitness test and physical self-concept of children had significant relationships.
