本研究的目的，在探討排灣族對琉璃珠之精神與象徵意義，以及琉璃珠在造型上的藝術價值。一般人認為，珠子為人們衣著的一部份，通常被視為裝飾而缺乏重要性，然而，許多人類學家、考古學家和藝術研究學者，認為珠子與人類發展史、文化具有密切的關係，從人類的需求，演變到複雜的意念投射，在人類交易過程和物質文化中均佔有一席的地位，所以此等議題的研究價值不但具有重要性，且其重要性並不亞於其他議題。

排灣族社會中的琉璃珠也與排灣族發展、文化有密切的關係，甚至可說是排灣族社會中最重要、流傳最久的東西，琉璃珠在排灣族的慶典、婚聘、成年禮等重要場合都扮演著重要的角色，而這些重要場合也往往最能反映出一個特定族群的民族特性，故研究琉璃珠的象徵意義，能讓我們對排灣族的社會文化更加的瞭解。

傳統上排灣族是一個貴族制度的社會，獨特的階級制度、社會特質投射在物質文化上，物質文化反映了無形的精神領域，故本研究藉由對物質文化的研究，以深入對精神領域的瞭解。排灣族擁有一種特殊的多彩琉璃珠，而各種不一樣的琉璃珠也都代表著相異的意涵，有的琉璃珠背後也都流傳著各式各樣的神話故事，本研究也探討了這些故事與排灣族社會間的關係，及故事背後的象徵意義為何。

本論文針對排灣族的琉璃珠做了一整體性之研究，從排灣族的分佈、風俗習慣等對排灣族基本的認識開始介紹，以期能顧及論文的廣度，文中亦比較了排灣族的琉璃珠與世界各地著名的「珠子」做比較，最後再深入的探討排灣族的琉璃珠，以期能顧及論文的深度，透過這些章節間的緊密串連，希望達到兼具廣度及深度的目標，筆者期以本論文將排灣族的特色與精神長存起來，忠實記錄並無私分享，在現今急遽變化的社會，盼能帶來一些啟示。

The purpose of my study is to probe into the spirit and symbolic meaning of the glass bead in the Piwan tribe. Besides, the study also focuses on the aesthetic value of the modeling of those glass beads. Many people consider that beads are a part of dressing. But beads are usually being seen as decorations and are less impotent. However, many anthropologists, archeologists, and virtuosi consider that beads play an impotent role in human history and culture. Originally, human just need the glass bead for decorations. But finally, it becomes to an emblem of certain sophisticated consciousness. It also plays an important role in the processes of human business transactions and material culture. So these issues are very important and its importance is not less than that of other issues.



The glass bean in Paiwan is strongly related to Paiwanese culture. Moreover, we can say that the glass bean is the most important and the most traditional things in Paiwan. The glass bean always plays an important role in many important situations and events. And by observing these important situations, we usually get some important information about a people. So, by studying the symbolic meaning of the glass bean, we can understand the Paiwanese society and culture more deeply.



Traditionally, Paiwanese society is an aristocratic society. It has the special feudality and social trait. And the social trait has a great effect upon material culture. Then material culture reflects the asomatous spirit. My study is to understand more about the asomatous spirit by studying material culture. Glass beans in Paiwan are rich of varieties, and every kind of glass beans is imposed different meanings. Some kinds of glass beans are with some old legends. My study also discovers the relation between these legends and Paiwanese society. And the symbolic meaning behind these legends is probed either.



This paper begins with the basic introduction of Paiwanese and then focuses these glass beads and gives a whole picture of them. I try hard to let this paper be more extensive. I also compare the Paiwanese glass bean with beans of other countries. Finally, I probe into the Paiwanese glass bean and try hard to let this paper be in depth. I hope that my study would well record the Paiwanese characteristic and their spirit. I hope to bring readers some introspection.



My study takes references to relative bibliography including journals, papers, textbooks, and data from websites.
