This study attempts to explore the cultural phenomena and functions of the Wutai Ngudradrekai tribal culture (benka ki Ngudradrekai) through the discussion of plants used in traditional headdresses of the Ngudradrekai Tribe of Wutai Village (vudaai) in Taiwan. Through a detailed analysis it is possible to understand the influence and significance of these headdresses in tribal life. In addition, these headdresses can be used to discuss the process of cultural change of Wutai’s Ngudradrekai tribe, including the encroachment of mainstream politics, economy and values. The past, present and future of Ngudradrekai tribal headdresses are worth our study, especially as they pertain to the preservation of the Ngudradrekai tribal culture.

Through gathering of plants and related information, as well as interviews with village elderly, it was found that 84 species of plants are used in headdresses. These plants can be divided into wild and cultivated species. Based on plant cultural value, headdresses can be divided into those that symbolize an obtained honor and those that do not. In addition, the presentation and names of plant headdresses depend on whether they are associated with an honor or not. For example, headbands with symbolic meaning are called dukipi; wreath-type headdresses are called ratheathe and inserted headdresses, meaning those in which plants are inserted, are called civare. Other types of headbands are called supungu or sangwalelebe, other types of wreaths karasupungu and other types of inserted headdresses sacingasane, etc. Headdresses with symbolic meaning can be divided into four major types: headdresses of the noble class (talyalalai), headdresses of the chieftain’s messengers (sasyakawlu), headdresses expressing individual skills (garangane) and headdresses for ceremonial use (twalrevege). These four types can be further divided into 24 different types of headdresses with symbolic meaning.
