Comparing with other sports, baseball sport has been highly developed in Taiwan mainly owing to the contribution of aborigines who play an extremely important role in baseball sport field. This thesis tries to find the relation between baseball movement and aborigines and furthermore to research the connection with baseball and external social culture.
In sports field, is it an advantage or an obstacle for aboriginal persons when it comes to their congenital physical conditions and social status? This study attempts to build a framework based on internal, external and environmental structural factors that affect the aborigines’ decision of sports and starts with detail interviews by using open-ended questionnaires with thirteen baseball players as samples including the college students on the school baseball team, the players in the national team, the professional baseball players and baseball coaches.
The purposes of the investigation are as following:
1. To explore the social background of aboriginal development and seek the key point
linking baseball sports and the aborigine.
2. From the viewpoint of social mobility to examine aborigines’ sport career and their
future.
3. To search the influence that the government and the enterprise have on the training
of players.
The results of the thesis are: 1. the aborigines can perform excellently in baseball field because of the historical background that Taiwan was settled by Japan, the aborigines with innate abilities for sports, the environment of their life and the guidance of interpersonal network. 2. The negative stereotype of the aborigine reinforced and copied by social majority makes aborigines oppressed doubly by social class and ethnic groups so that they are in deep water for the determination to be a baseball player and hardly can get rid of it. 3. It is not easy for aboriginal people to switch the occupation after devoting themselves to baseball movement. Although the government and the enterprise indeed bring benefits to the development of baseball players in the future, they lack of long-term scheme which causes the difficulty that baseball players meet when design their career plan. |
