The thesis attempts to delve into the hybrid thinking in Leslie Marmon Silko’s Garden’s in the Dunes. I discuss how the Native American’s culture and conception of nature can help us to rethink our relationship with each other and reshape our relationship with nature. In Chapter One, “Multicultural Journey of Hybridity,” I explore the diverse significance of hybridity and border-crossing issues by analyzing the multicultural journey in the novel. I develop H. K. Bhabha’s concept of hybridity to explain people’s interaction with different cultures. In Chapter Two, “Connecting Feminine Spirituality with Nature,” I discuss the relation between the female characters and nature in the novel. Silko tries to show the Ghost Dance ceremony to embody the concept of wholeness in Native American healing process, and the goddess worship in the gardens of Europe reveals the partnership between people and nature. In Chapter Three, “Gardening the Plants and Cultures,” I probe into the gardens and gardening issues, and discuss the meaning of gardens and gardening. Indigo’s practices of the gardening skills in her old gardens are a hybridized production of Sand Lizard and Euro-American wisdom. Looking back on the history of Native Americans and Europe from the view of the tribal girl Indigo, Silko delineates a larger scope of the history of mankind and focuses on the interaction and conversation between people and land.
