The traditional naming system is a significant force for sustained development for an ethnic group. It not only serves as an ethnic boundary, but also acts as the foundation of self-identification and the moral order of interpersonal relations of an ethnos. As Taiwan’s aboriginal peoples have different kinship systems and social structures, their naming systems are distinct. Research on Taiwanese aborigines’ naming systems began during the Japanese colonial period. And native scholars and experts have paid attention to the topic for more than a decade. The traditional naming systems of Taiwanese Aborigines and name registration have relevance over three different domains: academic research, ethnic policy, and ethnic movements. This paper is a systematic retrospective analysis of research on the topic.
