The island of Taiwan may not be large in size or abundant in natural resources, but from a cultural and geographical perspectives, it is unique in its own way. With a variety of terrain, fair weather, and convenient transportation all around the island, it has the potential and resources for developing tourism. If we could further integrate these unique elements into the industry, we could raise the competitiveness of the tourism in Taiwan. Dasi is a small town located in Northern Taoyuan County. In its early days, its residents consisted mostly of aborigines. Further on during the Ching Dynasty, immigrants came mostly from Jhangjhou of Fujian. Today, it has developed into a town with a combined variety of cultures succeeding in tourism. However, if its cultural assets and local culture could be integrated into tourism, it could raise the bar for the industry and create the largest benefits for the residents. Therefore, this is the direction in which the government and people should collaborate on.

This research is based on questionnaires from the adult residents of Dasi in terms of the variables of vital statistics, sense of community, participating motivations, and perceived benefits of cultural activities. The pre-test questionnaires were distributed in December of 2007, while the formal distribution of questionnaires was in December 2008. A total of 350 questionnaires were sent out, with 327 received, reaching a return rate of 93.4%. Descriptive Analysis, multivariate analysis of variance, ANOVA tests, Correlation Analysis, and Linear Regression were used in analyzing the data.

The research found that the level of education, religion, and duration of residence are noticeable effects on the variable of the sense of community. The gender, age, level of education, occupation, and duration of residence are noticeable effects on the variable of the participating motivation. The level of education, religion, and marriage are noticeable effects on the variable of the perceived benefits. The sense of community has noticeable positive relations with the perceived benefits and participating motivations. The perceived benefits and the participating motivations are interactive with the noticeable positive relations as well. This paper ends with the recommendations for future research and holding of events based on the findings of the study.
