The purpose of this research was to apply the transtheoretical model to understand (1) the health-promoting lifestyles and exercise-perception of elder and middle ages’ Paiwan ethnic aboriginal population;(2) the differences in health-promoting lifestyles and exercise-perception in elder and middle ages’ Paiwan ethnic aboriginal population from socio-economic status;(3) the relationship between the health-promoting lifestyles and exercise-perception among these aboriginal population;(4) the differences in health-promoting lifestyles and exercise-perception of these aboriginal population in different exercise stages;(5) the effect of health-promoting lifestyles and exercise-perception in exercise stage among these aboriginal population. The research was conducted to survey the Paiwan aboriginew who were over 40 years old, and 294 valid questionnaires were returned. The data was analyzed by descriptive statistics, student t test, one-way ANOVA, Pearson product correlation test, discriminant analysis and stepwise multiple regression. The results were as follows:
1. With regards to health-promoting lifestyles, there was significant difference in the self-perceived health and regular exercise; with regards to overall exercise- perception, there was statistically significant difference only in the self-perceived health.
2. There were positive correlation between the health-promoting lifestyles and, exercise perception in the perceived benefit and exercise self-efficacy, yet negative correlation with the perceived exercise barriers.
3. There was significant difference between exercise stages and the overall scores of the health-promoting lifestyles among the aboriginal population.
4. The recreational activity, the perceived benefit to exercise and the perceived barriers to exercise could be effectively differentiated for the exercise stages.
5. The total explained variances of the recreational activity, the perceived barriers to exercise, sleep, and exercise stages were 54.4%.
