[ ABSTRACT ]
Shifts in the Sports Culture of the SaiciatsSummaryThe sports cultures of Taiwanese aboriginal tribes all have their special characteristics and cultural significance. The aborigines, however, underwent the rule of different governments. Primitive sports cultures are gradually disappearing with the passage of time. If we do not take the time to systematize these sports cultures, there will be no way to understand the aboriginal sports cultures. This thesis is primarily a study of changes in the primitive sports culture of the Saiciats during the Ching Dynasty, the Period of Japanese Occupation, and the Post-War Years and is based on relevant literature and field work among the Saiciats. The following conclusions were reached during this study:1. During the Ching Dynasty, due to a primitive lifestyle, the sports culture of the Saiciats revolved around the maintenance of production and battle capabilities. They laid special stress on cultivating and training physical abilities during their everyday games and in the process of growing up. We discovered that the primitive Saiciats were very active and systematic in their physical training. The concepts of the Saiciats towards their primitive sports training, mobility, and material systems were a basis that distinguished them from other groups. The primitive sports culture of the Saiciats brought out the special characteristics of the tribe.2. During the Period of Japanese Occupancy, the traditions and customs of the Saiciats changed notably under the oppression and civilizing of the Japanese and, as a result, their primitive sports culture began to gradually disappear. The introduction of modern sports which reoriented the Saiciat sports culture around leisure and competition is worthy of approval. But whether or not the emergence of Japanese flavor in the sports culture of the Saiciats during this time diminished the special characteristics of the Saiciat sports culture, thereby decreasing the uniqueness of their tribal culture is worth investigating.3. The sports culture of the Saiciats has undergone obvious changes under the rule of the Ching Dynasty, the Japanese, and the Nationalist government and their traditional sports culture has completely disappeared and, correspondingly, the uniqueness of the tribal culture and the emphasis placed on physical training have dwindled. Modern sports have shifted the emphasis of the Saiciat sports culture to competition and the dilemma as to whether this has been good or bad for the Saiciats is basically the same as the "traditional" vs. "modernization" dilemma. This is something we should think about.
