ABSTRACT
The purpose of this thesis is to analyze the lexical structures of the ''''Amis language. A distinction is made between content words, function words and derivational words to specify word formation of the ''''Amis language. The verbs are further categorized in one chapter, with a full description of the properties of each kind.
The writer, a native ''''Amis, gathered the data through deep interviews, symposiums and discussions; conducted experimental teaching; and undertook analysis as well as illustration of the morphological rules of ''''Amis lexicons. Basically, ''''Amis lexes come in three categories--roots, derivatives, and loanwords. The focus of the research lies on: 1) the basic structure, syllabic arrangement, and lexis categories of the roots; and 2) the formative rules, basic elements, categories, meaning, and usage of the derivatives.
The thesis is divided into five chapters. Chapter One is the introduction, including the purpose, methodology, survey of existing research, geography, writing system, and limitations. Chapter Two is devoted to a comparison of the various ''''Amis dialects in terms of phonics, lexicon, and syntax. Chapter Three, comprising ''''Amis lexical formation, is the focus of this research. This chapter analyzes the morphological rules for the formation of the various roots and derivatives. Chapter Four deals with verb classification and properties, with an analysis of the meaning and usage of derivational verbs. Chapter Five is the conclusion, which sums up the research discoveries and offers suggestions for future research.
There are a number of unique features to this thesis. First, it is a native ''''Amis’ view on the lexical structures of the ''''Amis language. Second, it progresses from a linguistic study onto an exploration deep into the geographically tribal distributions of ''''Amis. Specifically, it leads off from the deep structures of the ''''Amis lexicons into some hidden thought patterns to some taboos and tribal characteristics of the maternal ''''Amis society. Third, the author has provided in the appendices some valuable first-hand sources gathered in his research, including a collocation table that shows how commonly used words differ in the three dialect areas of North, Middle and South. A number of other useful tables are also provided for the reader’s reference.
