Aboriginal culture in Taiwan is fading, making the task of preserving and inheriting more difficult. The source of iconic and dictated history thus proved to be important, especially for aboriginal tribes who lack verbal record. Icon is a way of non-verbal communication rivaled with verbal ones. By inscribing and recording things around people''''s daily life, it bears a close and specific relation with environment.

Through the analysis of conventional iconographic language of the tribe, this research addressed the relationship between compositional elements in Atayal village (Shan-bi village here) and iconography process in the light of cultural study. By looking at the employment of icons in physical and social environment, the properties of icons (e.g. forms, material, forming factors, denotation and connotation) were analyzed to understand the relationship between icon and environment.

As far as sources were concerned, literature review and field study (mostly profundity interview) were engaged to collect iconic data. Grounded theory was used as analytical method to interpreting relationships between icon and environment.

The result showed that it is usually limited requiring denotations of icons from literature and interview. Due to the change of times and the withering of dictation history, it is hard to find directly denoted meanings in the relationships between icons and environment in Shan-Bi Village. Therefore the research turned to put more emphasize on the observation of environmental behavior in relation to environment. It occurred that Atayal people''''s iconographic view is inextricably interrelated, while environmental information was not easily expressed by simple Atayal icon and was highly symbolized in behavior. The main conclusion could be summarized as followed:

1. It is highly possible that Atayal textile icon bears

unction of verbal communication.

2. There are regional limitations in the development of icons.

3. The meaning of Atayal icon is the key point of inquiry.

4. Empirical laws dictates iconographic process.

5. Atayal icon could be transformed through daily life and

embodied in daily life.

In the end, the author proposed design principles of applying Atayal icons into the environment. The Atayal people’s ecological and living attitude should be understood to perceive the inherent nature of deeper structure of the environment. This way, the design of icons could be transfer into the survey and application of natural resources and, furthermore, the re-shaping of the environment of the tribe, thus minimizing the misuse and abuse of the icon.
