摘要
Gardens and plantations are central in people’s life in Tasiriki, yet they are so in different ways. Both, in their specificity, contribute to the generation of sociality and the making of place as much as they make manifest people’s cosmological assumptions, in a way constantly operating as a kind of mirror of the social processes at play in the society. These last months, my research has been focusing on gardens’ aesthetics – the way people beautify or not their gardens, and about the meaning of the presence or absence of such an aesthetic gesture, thereby giving me a different perspective in the way I could approach and comprehend social processes in Tasiriki and especially people’s relation to customary practices (kastom) and Christianity. In this presentation, I briefly come back on the comparative work I did on gardens’ aesthetics in Melanesia, some of its theoretical implications, and the hypotheses I have formulated for Tasiriki. Then, through the description of people’s horticultural and cash cropping activities, their respective differences, evolution and implications, I brush a portrait of people’s conception of kinship and the interplay between kastom and church. Finally, I present some of the directions for future research that this new perspective has opened.
